About Jayne Ann Krentz
Born on March 28, 1948 in Borrego Springs, California, Jayne Castle lived with her mother and two brothers. She attended the University of California where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. She then earned a Masters degree in Library Sciences from San Jose State University. While in San Jose, she met her future husband Frank Krentz. The couple later moved to Seattle, Washington where Jayne and her husband continue to reside.
She began writing romance novels when she worked in the Duke University library system, and achieved publication in 1979. Since then Jayne has penned numerous novels under several pen names, such as Stephanie James and Amanda Glass. Her novels have been published under the Harlequin and Silhouette imprints in addition to other houses such as Penguin and Bantam publishing groups. Currently, Jayne Ann Krentz writes under the pseudonyms Jayne Castle and Amanda Quick. Each author persona creates stories of contemporary, futuristic, and historical romance.
Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women
As editor and contributor to the collection of critical literary analysis essays entitled Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women: Romance Writers on the Appeal of the Romance, Jayne and her contemporaries offered critics and enthusiasts an opportunity to study the historical and literary elements of the romance genre. The publication garnered critical praise from feminists and literary critics alike and was honored with the Suan Koppelman Award for Feminist Studies.
Discussing the history behind archetypal character development, creating plot for audience expectations and satisfaction, and addressing the disruption of patriarchal ideology in romance narratives, Jayne Ann Krentz provided readers and academic scholars with a thoughtful and insightful review of romance fiction. The collection pushed the discussion of romance literature towards new perceptions and definitions, while situating romance novels with in the American literary canon of narrative fiction.
